The term Sludge comes from the thickness in the overall sound of the riffs and the pace that the music is played at not too slow but slow enough for it to be...well, sludgy, thick and syrupy. You could also say that the term comes from the fact that Sludge doom was born in the deep south where they have a lot swamps that are....sludgy I guess, lol.
